You can contribute to SIANS

Industrial Heritage Nova Scotia invites you to contribute newly discovered sites to our database or to provide further information on sites already catalogued. In doing so, you will be helping to preserve our shared history.

Users of the SIANS Database are reminded that the Special Places Protection Act of Nova Scotia applies to sites in the database. The purpose of the Act is to:

"provide for the preservation, protection, regulation, exploration, excavation, acquisition and study of archaeological and historical remains and palaeontological sites which are considered important parts of the natural or human heritage of the Province. . . . No person shall carry out explorations or make excavations on any land in the Province, including land covered with water, for the purpose of seeking heritage objects, without a heritage research permit."

The following is an outline of the contents for submissions:

  1. Site name: This can be your name for the site or a commonly used name.
  2. Location: GPS, map coordinates or description, e.g. Hwy 102, Junction 7, north on Hwy 2 etc. The Nova Scotia Atlas 6th edition can be a useful resource, as its page number and coordinates are fairly precise. If you supply latitude and longitude from GPS or map then a Google Map will display the location on the results page.
  3. Site Description. A brief description of the site, the dates when it operated, and what remains of it. If you know of any relevant sources, government documents, local histories, etc., please include them.
  4. Photographs, if you have any you can just attach them to the email
  5. Your name. We will include your name on the listing if you wish.
  6. It doesn't really matter how much or how little information you have. If you don't want to use the form just send an email containing your information to sians@IndustrialHeritageNS.ca
  7. Thank you.
