Rock Quarry tools of the 19th and early 20th century

Prior to any rock drilling tools, to break the granite, holes were chiseled into the rock by hand. This was labour intensive, requiring two or three men working on every hole. One lucky man held the chisel/ drill bit in his hands and rotated it after every blow from a maul swung by one or two other workers. The hand-powered rock drill, complete with "star drill", shown here, must have been a welcome improvement for the sartorially elegant quarry man,
